HYPOCRISY: The Actor in the Real World

The word hypocrisy is rooted in the Greek word hypokrisis, which originally referred to an actor on a stage. In ancient Greek theater, actors wore large masks to portray characters with personalities entirely different from their own. While the performance lasted, the actor was hidden, and the audience interacted only with the disguised persona.In the context of a play, this is acceptable because the audience understands the deception is for the sake of entertainment and profit. The actor eventually goes home, removes the mask, and returns to their true life. However, a profound problem arises when this theatrical "dual life" is brought into reality.In theater, masks are visible; in life, hypocrites wear unseen masks. Hypocrisy is the act of denying one's true self and exchanging it for a borrowed identity. By pretending to hold beliefs or qualities they do not truly possess, hypocrites may gain temporary fame, honor, or social benefits. Yet, because these rewards are based on a lie, they are never authentic.Hypocrisy starts with a lie to oneself before it spreads to others. We must recognize that our identity is not something we "invent" to please others, but something inherently created within us. There is great wisdom and peace in simply being oneself.Tragically, hypocrisy has become a silent killer in our generation. It has murdered diversity by forcing everyone into the same molds, turning these "masks" into graves where true identities are buried. The messes and disappointments we face daily are often the result of these masked identities—people acting out roles they were never meant to play."Unmasking" is a difficult and often painful exercise, but it is necessary for a better future. To fix the brokenness in our society, we need true identities to be displayed. We must have the courage to take off the masks, stop the performance, and allow our authentic selves to emerge. Only through unmasked identities can we find real connection and lasting solutions to the challenges of our world.
