CHEATING : A Call Back to Wholeness

Once upon a time, love was sacred. Today, it feels like a social experiment. What was once the tender pursuit of two hearts has become a game of impulse, pretense, and temporary highs. The “young couple” culture — so loudly celebrated in movies, songs, and social media — has crept into every corner of youth life. Even teenagers barely out of childhood speak the language of “relationships” they scarcely understand.

Walk through the streets of any city — Addis Ababa included — and you’ll see it everywhere: pairs of young hearts chasing after a moment, mistaking attention for affection, and desire for devotion. What was meant to be pure companionship has been redefined by a world that glorifies immorality and calls it “love.”

After the thrill fades and the rush settles, disappointment sets in like an unwelcome dawn. The laughter turns hollow; the promises dissolve. What remains are fragments — broken trust, wounded hearts, and often, scars that take years to heal.

Some drown quietly in guilt or heartbreak. Others spiral deeper — into depression, into numbness, into self- destruction. The pattern repeats itself — a cycle of betrayal and abandonment that normalizes deceit. They call it “moving on, ” but it’s really “passing the pain forward.” Each “ex” becomes another ghost haunting the soul, another piece of innocence lost in the endless rehearsal of heartbreak. Cheating doesn’t just wound individuals — it infects the culture. When betrayal becomes routine, sincerity dies. When deception is normalized, love loses meaning.

In a world where cheating is shrugged off as “normal,” genuine love is becoming endangered.

Every lie erodes the soil of trust, every betrayal weakens the roots of community. Friendships and relationships become coated in suspicion; honesty feels old-fashioned, and accountability disappears in the smoke of “freedom.”

Immorality, subtle and seductive, doesn’t always appear in the shadows — it often walks in daylight, disguised as romance. But behind the filtered selfies and romantic hashtags lies a silent tragedy: hearts that no longer believe in loyalty.

True love cannot grow in the soil of deceit. It flourishes only where truth, honor, and purity are planted. If our generation is to heal, we must reclaim the lost meaning of love — not the fleeting emotion of infatuation, but the steadfast commitment that mirrors divine faithfulness. Love is not a game; it’s a covenant. And until we return to that truth, cheating will remain one of the quietest yet most devastating pandemics of our time — eroding the beauty of love, one broken promise at a time.
